LUMIFLON® FEVE Resins Improve Corrosion Resistance and Gloss Retention of Marine Vessel Coatings

EXTON, Pa., July 17, 2017 –LUMIFLON^® fluoroethylene vinyl ether (FEVE) resins from AGC Chemicals Americas help boating manufacturers create ultra-durable coatings for ocean-going vessels and pleasure boats. LUMIFLON provides superior corrosion resistance, maintenance savings and a continuous high-gloss shine on surfaces exposed to or immersed in fresh or salt water. In addition to coatings for watercraft, LUMIFLON’s beneficial properties make it an ideal topcoat additive for marine applications such as bridges, offshore oilrigs, lighthouses, water towers and storage tanks.

LUMIFLON FEVE resins have outperformed other common coatings used in the marine industry on steel, aluminum, magnesium, fiberglass and plastics. Because of LUMIFLON’s unique chemical make-up, coatings made with the material are impermeable to oxygen, water and chloride ions, substantially reducing the corrosion of metal substrates. Additionally, LUMIFLON-based coatings are easier to clean than other coatings. As a result, manufacturers increase savings in both maintenance and repainting costs over the life of the vessel.

LUMIFLON is able to keep its high-gloss shine even when used in the most demanding applications. In the EMMAQUA^® (Equatorial Mount with Mirrors for Acceleration with Water) weathering test, LUMIFLON retained 80% of its initial gloss after being exposed to radiation of 2.5 million Langleys (units of energy distributed over an area)–which is the equivalent of 25 years of sunlight exposure. It also provided outstanding gloss retention in South Florida exposure testing of over ten years, making it the ideal coating additive for extending the life of any boat by decades.

LUMIFLON FEVE resins are available for almost any type of coating, including solvent-based, powder, environmentally friendly low-VOC and HAPs-free coatings, and water-based coatings. A transparent fluororesin, LUMIFLON can be used to make both clear and pigmented coatings in more than 230 colors inhigh-gloss to flat finishes. LUMIFLON is the first solvent-soluble fluoropolymer resin for coatings that can be cured at room temperature or at elevated temperatures. Because LUMIFLON resins do not require heat curing, these topcoats can be applied in the factory or in the field.
