August 26, 2025 – AGC Marks 50th Anniversary of FLEMION Ion Exchange Membranes

TOKYO, Japan., August 26, 2025 – AGC Inc., a global leader in glass, chemicals, and high-tech materials, announces the 50th anniversary of its pioneering FORBLUE FLEMION™ fluorinated ion-exchange membranes, first introduced in 1975. Over the past half-century, FLEMION membranes have become the cornerstone of chlor-alkali electrolysis worldwide, enabling industries to achieve greater energy efficiency, lower operating costs and reduce environmental impact.

Originally developed as a sustainable alternative to mercury-based manufacturing, FLEMION membranes have continuously evolved through AGC’s extensive polymer design expertise and in-house chlor-alkali plant operations. Today’s latest grade, the F-9060 membrane, delivers significant reductions in cell voltage—up to 120mV lower than previous generations—cutting electricity costs and CO₂ emissions in this energy-intensive process.

Since its debut, FLEMION membranes have undergone multiple upgrades, each designed to meet diverse customer needs. From the early F-8080 series to the F-9010 series and now the F-9060 series, AGC has introduced specialized grades for different electrolytic cell types and operating conditions. This continuous innovation has helped the product secure leading market positions in key regions, including the United States, China, India, Europe, and Southeast Asia.

Commitment to Sustainability and Circularity
Looking ahead, AGC is advancing research into next-generation membranes that further reduce cell voltage while enhancing long-term stability. The company is also exploring life cycle assessment initiatives and closed-loop recycling programs to recover used membranes and repurpose them into other fluorine-based products, reinforcing its commitment to environmental stewardship.

Industry experts from around the world recognize FLEMION membranes as the best-performing in its class. In India, the F-9010 and F-9060 have set new benchmarks for efficiency, while in China, technical support programs and customer seminars have cemented the product’s strong market share. Across Europe, AGC’s focus on building brand loyalty through partnerships continues to drive adoption and trust.
