Chemical separation is used to isolate components of a substance for analysis, reclamation or purification. Separation methods include dialysis, electrolysis, filtration, evaporation, distillation and chromatography. Membrane technology is one method of chemical separation and filtration that is used in many industrial, medical and scientific applications.

AGC’s line of FORBLUE™ nonporous membranes provide cost-effective chemical separation. The product family includes membranes for electrochemistry, chlor-alkali electrolysis, electro/diffusion dialysis and gas drying/humidification.

FORBLUE membranes are used in many applications including chlorine production, hydrogen production, acid recovery, wastewater treatment, salt removal, groundwater desalination, food demineralization, medical testing, organics purification, and valuables recovery.

FORBLUE membranes are extremely durable because they are resistant to acids and bases. They use passive and electrolytic separation technology. Since they don’t require phase change or moving parts, they use less energy and have lower maintenance costs than competing technologies. They also have a smaller footprint than alternative separation methodologies.

FORBLUE™ sunsep™ Gas Dryers/Humidifiers

These nonporous, moisture-selective membranes are passive gas dryers/humidifiers. The module is simply structured with hollow fiber membranes and durable casings. The membrane is made from a fluorinated ionomer, so it has high chemical resistance. It minimizes permeability of gases other than moisture and features a simple mechanism of H2O partial pressure differential to cause wet/dry gas production.

Applications include drying compressed air used by pneumatic equipment, removing water vapor from sample gases being analyzed, humidifying industrial gas, production of medical oxygen and fuel cell gas conditioning. They are also used with lab instruments and analytical equipment that require a dry air purge.

FORBLUE™ S-Series for Electrolysis and Electrodialysis

These wet and dry membrane grades are fluorinated cation exchange membranes with a sulfonic acid group. They resist corrosive chemicals because all materials that make up the membranes are made from fluorinated resins, including the reinforcing fabric. They are used in hydrogen production, redox flow batteries, TMAH production, persulfate production and wastewater treatment electrodialysis.

FORBLUE™ SELEMION™ for Electrolysis, Diffusion Dialysis and Electrodialysis

These film-like ion exchange membranes are used to dilute and concentrate ionic materials for cation exchange electrodialysis, anion exchange electrodialysis and anion exchange diffusion dialysis. AGC also offers laboratory-scale electrodialyzers to experiment with SELEMION membranes. They come with rectifier, pumps, tanks and all required accessories needed to fully evaluate the membranes.

Key applications include:

  • Water treatment and desalination
  • Food mineralization
  • Purification of organics
  • Valuables recovery
  • Wastewater treatment and minimization

FORBLUE™ FLEMION® for Caustic Soda Production

These fluorinated ion exchange membranes are used in electrolyzers of electrolysis plants in the manufacture of caustic soda, caustic potash, chlorine and hydrogen-basic chemical products.

They achieve substantial energy savings because they require very little electrical power to decompose the purified brine. They also minimize the influence of brine impurities and enable manufacturers to maintain 97%-98% electrical current efficiency. AGC FORBLUE FLEMION® membranes are the global leader in power savings and have a proven worldwide track record of customer satisfaction.
