Fluoropolymers from AGC Chemicals Americas Improve Performance of Under-the-Hood Auto Components

EXTON, Pa., February 28, 2018 – Automotive original equipment manufacturers and consumers alike want more robust hoses and storage tanks that better withstand harsh chemicals in order to improve vehicle performance and require fewer repairs. When automotive components are made with fluoropolymer materials from AGC Chemicals Americas, they exhibit superior resistance against corrosion, heat and chemicals throughout the vehicle system, from engines and brakes to fuel components and electronics.

AGC will feature specialty materials for the automotive industry at the 2018 ITB Automotive Energy Storage Systems Conference and Exhibit. These materials have years of proven performance in fuel system components like tanks, seals and vapor lines, but now they are also improving hoses, tubes, cabling and other elements of AC, evaporative emission control (EVAP), exhaust and coolant systems. Applications include:

Fluon® ETFE Resins and Compounds

Components such as liquid and vapor fuel lines, coolant tubes, compressor hoses, fuel tanks and filler necks exhibit outstanding performance in any construction when they are made from adhesive Fluon ETFE resins.

High-temperature Fluon ETFE is an ideal material for automotive wire and cable insulation.

Low-melting adhesive Fluon ETFE is a cost-effective solution in applications such as hot water hoses, rubber hose mandrels and multi-layer tubes that convey harsh materials.

Fluon® PTFE Compounds
Fluon filled PTFE compounds are used in seal and gasket applications that need to withstand ongoing heat and pressure, like fuel tanks, connectors, and oxygen sensors for fuel systems.

AFLAS® Fluoroelastomers
These fluoroelastomers enhance performance and extend the life of pumps and seals because they are highly resistant to acids, strong bases, solvents, hydrocarbons, amines and coolants commonly found in lubricating and extended life fluids.

AFLAS is used in seals found in EVAP systems that capture evaporating gasoline fumes and other emissions. These resins can also withstand nitrogen oxide (NOx) reduction agents used in diesel engines equipped with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology. AFLAS fluoroelastomers exhibit superior electrical, chemical and thermal resistance, making them ideal for transmission cable and HEV/EV cable insulations that need to be lightweight and perform reliably at high temperatures.
